This news post is more than one year old. Some information may have changed.

The University community is invited to the official unveiling of a portrait of Alden Nowlan, by New Brunswick artist Stephen Scott, to be held March 18, 2009, 4pm – 5pm in the Milham Room of the Harriet Irving Library. A reception will follow.

Alden Nowlan was writer-in-residence at the University of New Brunswick from 1969 to his death in 1983. Born in Nova Scotia, Nowlan came to New Brunswick at the age of sixteen to become a journalist in Hartland. He composed and published poetry throughout his life and, in 1967, won the Governor General’s Award for Bread, Wine and Salt. Other well-received compilations included Between Tears and Laughter (1971) and I’m a Stranger Here Myself (1974). In addition to poetry, Nowlan published stories, plays, essays and novels.

Born in Saint John, Stephen Scott is an accomplished and well-respected artist whose work is collected internationally. He lives and works near Fredericton.

Financial assistance for this project was gratefully received from the Alvin J. Shaw Trust Fund.
