THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF DOCUMENTARY FILM

Presenter: Dr. Scott Preston, Assistant Professor, UNB

This workshop will introduce researchers to the history and evolution of the documentary as a form, from its beginnings up to today. We will consider what distinguishes a documentary from other kinds of film and video productions, and how the documentary is expanded by new digital media. Finally, we will consider in particular the different ways that academic researchers have participated in the making of documentaries throughout its history and into the present. I hope this will inspire some of you to consider using this form to disseminate your own research.

UpToDate is a website and app-based tool that provides quick access to information about diagnosis, clinical practice, and point of care information. UpToDate draws reliable information from many clinical sources and presents it in an easy-to-read format that supports learning and practice in medical fields.

CELLPHILMS FOR KNOWLEDGE MOBILIZATION IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM

PRESENTERS:  Marc Bragdon, Librarian, UNB and Casey Burkholder, PhD candidate, McGill University

This workshop will explore film as both an adjunct to traditional instruction methods and, in the form of cellphilms, an alternative modality for student projects and knowledge mobilization. Cellphilms (cellphones + films) are videos made on a cellphone, and are easily disseminated from cellphone-to-cellphone, screened in classrooms and at community events, and/or uploaded onto social media.  In this workshop, our objectives are to introduce cellphilm method drawing on our own experiences with the method and to interrogate and deepen understandings about the contributions and limitations of integrating cellphones into participatory filmmaking.

On Friday, March 31st, UNB Libraries will be participating in the first Queer Research Day, a bi-campus initiative between UNB and STU.  There will be presentations and panels by students and faculty from UNBSJ, UNBF, and St. Thomas.

The day will begin in Tilley Hall, and move in the afternoon to the Harriet Irving Library, where ARTS 3000 student Hannah Ruff will have an exhibit in the Stewart Room built around the University of Victoria’s Transgender Archive.  Head of Archives & Special Collections, Fran Holyoke, will be speaking about the exhibit.  Jeannie Bail, Director of Learning & Research Services, will then speak about libraries supporting LGBTQIA+  communities and the closing keynote and reception will both be held in the HIL:

PARTICIPATORY FILMMAKING: A CASE STUDY

Dr. Matt Rogers, Assistant Professor, UNB For this presentation, Dr. Rogers will share information about his current research partnership with the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre, which is focused on addressing cyber-violence with youth through participatory filmmaking.

Dr. Matt Rogers is an Assistant Professor in the UNB Faculty of Education and an Atlantic Canadian Filmmaker. His research focuses on youth-centered participatory filmmaking and documentary inquiry as a knowledge mobilization tool. Dr. Rogers’ personal film work, through the production company Frictive Pictures, has been internationally recognized with awards and nominations cinematography, editing, writing, and direction. Recently, he won Best Short Film Director for his film “a list,” at the Global Cinema Film Festival of Boston.
