2011 Showcase For Faculty & Staff

All UNB Fredericton faculty and staff members are invited to attend the Libraries’ showcase of resources and services. Our schedule includes short sessions on such topics as electronic reserves, embedding library instruction into course curricula, using data and geospatial information, UNB’s institutional repository, the Library on your mobile device, copyright, e-book readers, and the Library in content management systems. Copyright Sessions

Copyright session for UNB Staff:

A session on copyright for UNB Staff is being offered on Tuesday, July 12, at 10:00am, at Harriet Irving Library’s Milham Room, Rm 100.

The session is intended to update staff on UNB’s new Copyright Policy and Guidelines, and how copying activities within the University are affected.

Staff involved in photocopying and/or preparing materials for instructors use will find the session useful.  Separate sessions are being offered for teaching faculty; this session is intended to meet the needs of support staff and others not directly involved in the classroom.  No registration is required.

Copyright Sessions for the Classroom:

Copyright sessions with an emphasis on the needs of course instructors will be offered periodically through the summer.  Sessions will run on a Q & A format.

Currently, sessions are scheduled for July 13 and August 10, both at 10:30 am in HIL’s Milham Room, Rm. 100.  Additional sessions will be added in response to demand.  Please let us know if you, your Department or Faculty, has an interest in having an additional session scheduled.  For further information please contact:  Josh Dickison at jjd@unb.ca or 447-3378.

Summer Cinema Series

The University of New Brunswick Libraries proudly presents the Summer Cinema Series:

July 7 – Howl (Directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, 2010; 84 min

James Franco stars as counter-culture revolutionary Allen Ginsberg, who recounts the road trips, love affairs and search for personal liberation that led to the most electrifying work of his career: the poem HOWL. Meanwhile, in a San Francisco courtroom, HOWL is on trial as a host of witnesses debate the artistic merits of Ginsberg’s controversial work, and whether or not it should be banned from publication.

July 14 – The Orphanage El Orphanato (Directed by J.A. Bayona, 2007; 105 min; Spanish with English subtitles

Spanish-Mexican horror film about a woman who relocates with her family back to her childhood home.  There she opens an orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible, sinister new friend.  Winner of 7 Goyas in Spain upon its release.

July 21 – Barking Dogs Never Bite플란다스의 (Directed by Bong Joon-ho, 2000; 106 min; Korean with English subtitles

Directorial debut of Korean Bong Joon-ho, this dark comedy tells the tale of an unemployed and unmotivated grad student, looking for a job as a professor, who is driven to distraction by a yapping dog somewhere on the block of his apartment complex. In a fit of anger he takes extreme action to deal with his tormentor, an action that will come to haunt him.

July 28 – Shall We Dance (Directed by Mark Sandrich, 1937; 116 min

Classic Depression-era musical comedy in which a ballet dancer (Fred Astaire) and a showgirl (Ginger Rogers) fake a marriage for publicity purposes.  Will they fall in love?  Features roller skating and a lovely score by George and Ira Gershwin.

Showtime is 7:00 pm in the Milham Room (100) of the Harriet Irving Library.

Refreshments will be provided.

UNBLib Mobile: New Features

New Mobile WebsiteUNB Libraries mobile site has recently been upgraded and we have added several exciting customization options.

Quick access to information for all five libraries is now just a swipe away with our new library widget on the homepage. Tap or swipe the yellow spinner to quickly switch libraries and view hours, email and phone numbers. Follow About to get maps, floor plans and more extensive hours coverage. You can set a default library in the new preferences option.

Do you sign out a lot of materials? Now using the My Account customization, you can set your mobile device to track all your checkouts with complete listings and dates, as well as warning indicators for materials that are coming due or are overdue.

UNB WorldCat Mobile has been updated with a new interface, more complete item records and the addition of limited article searching.

Course reserves are now searchable just like the main website. This Fall we will be adding a new module allowing you to display your personal course reserves without having to search for them.

UNBLib Mobile is designed and best suited for use with smartphones, but you can access with any device at //m.lib.unb.ca.

Alcuin Society’s “best Looking Books Of 2009 & 2010”

Winning books from the 27th and 28th annual Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada are currently on display in the H.R. Stewart Exhibition Room, 5th floor, Harriet Irving Library. Viewing hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The 2010 prize-winning books will be available for viewing until 17 June 2011 while the 2009 award winners will remain on display until 31 August 2011.

Special arrangements were made so that both sets of award winning books would be displayed at once, during Congress 2011. The Harriet Irving Library is the only New Brunswick venue hosting the book exhibit.

Prize winning entries
•    2009 – Judges selected 30 winning books from 252 Canadian entries published in 2009, from nine provinces, and 108 publishers. Gaspereau Press (Kentville, NS) was recognized for five of its designs. Included in their prize-winning entries was The Sentimentalists (First Prize – Prose Fiction) which went on to win the 2010 Scotiabank Giller Prize. Twenty-eight of the prize-winning titles are on display.

•    2010 – Judges selected 37 winning titles from 217 Canadian entries published in 2010, from nine provinces and 96 publishers. Thirty-two award-winning books are included in the exhibit.

The Alcuin Society (//www.alcuinsociety.com) is a Vancouver-based non-profit society for the support and appreciation of fine books. In addition to the annual Book Design Competition, the Society publishes a quarterly journal, Amphora, and organizes lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and field visits on various aspects of the book.
