Oed

This news post is more than one year old. Some information may have changed.

Image of logo for the Oxford English DictionaryThe Oxford English Dictionary (OED) records the development of the English language over the last 1500 years. It traces the evolution of over 600,000 words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of sources—from classic literature and specialist periodicals to film scripts, wills, and cookery books.

As a historical dictionary, the OED is an unrivalled guide to the meaning, history, usage, and pronunciation of English words, both past and present. It records new words and the changing usage of existing words.

Key Features of OED Online:

♦    Distinguish the various meaning(s) of a word in different historical periods

♦    Search for the first recorded use of words

♦    Find etymologies, variant spellings, different pronunciations, and quotations

♦    Find a term when you know the meaning but have forgotten the word

♦    Search for quotations from a specified year, a particular author, and/or work

♦    Search for words that have come into English via a particular language

Library Course Reserves

This news post is more than one year old. Some information may have changed.

Course instructors are invited to use the new course reserve system developed and recently launched by the Libraries.  Our new system offers many enhancements, including the ability to organize readings by week, linking to online readings, and the ability for students to log in and access their reserve readings for all courses in which they are enrolled.

Please submit your reading lists as soon as possible for courses to be offered next term.  We will endeavour to clear any items which require copyright clearance, but encourage instructors to provide as much lead time as possible.

Further information can be found on Manage Course Reserves.

Spanish Embassy Film Series: “Camino” (Nov. 17)

This news post is more than one year old. Some information may have changed.

The Spanish Embassy and the UNB Dept. of Culture & Language Studies, supported by UNBF Libraries, present the award-winning Spanish film, “Camino”, winner of an impressive 6 Goya awards in 2008 (equivalent to the Oscars in Spain).

This free public screening will be held on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the Milham Room (Rm. #100), Harriet Irving Learning Commons, UNBF Campus (free parking).

Made in 2008, “Camino” is a controversial film directed by Javier Fesser and based on the true story of Alexia Gonzàlez-Barros, a girl who died from spinal cancer at fourteen and is currently in process of canonization. This film directly accuses the Opus Dei organization of exploiting the illness of a young girl.  Critics say the film “intertwines melodrama, horror and animation in outrageous new ways to enrich us with what is one of the most powerful Spanish films of the decade.”  Please note, this film is 138 min. in length.

The film is presented in Spanish with English subtitles and will be briefly introduced by Dr. Jasmina Terzioska (St. Thomas University).  All are welcome.
