This news post is more than one year old. Some information may have changed.

The Harriet Irving Library is holding a special book sale in aid of the Medabo zena Reading Room in Ethiopia. The books are in very good condition without library labels or other markings. The collection includes collectible children’s books as well as popular literature, history, literature, art history and many other subjects. The sale will be held in the Learning Commons, Harriet Irving Library from February 12-17. Last year we raised  over $1,300 to help establish the Alicho Wuriro Reading Room in Ethiopia.

The proceeds of the sale will go to help supply much-needed reading materials, in English and local languages, furnishings and staff training for this new library. For more information please go to //www.codecan.org/get-involved/adopt-library/find-library/medabo-zena-reading-room

This news post is more than one year old. Some information may have changed.

The NB Latino Association, UNB Libraries, and the Dept. of Culture & Language Studies present the award-winning Mexican film, “Silent Light”  by Carlos Reygadas. This free public screening will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 7:00 pm in the Milham Room (Room 100), Harriet Irving Library, UNB Campus (free parking).

Winner of the critic’s prize at the Cannes Film Festival, this film centers around Johan, a Mennonite living in Mexico, who is tormented with guilt over his extramarital affair with Marianne.  His father, best friend and wife know the truth, but Johan’s suffering has to do with his faith, which he can’t reconcile with his deeds.  Critics say: “As the fim progresses, its hypnosis becomes heightened, its spell becomes entrancing.”

The film will be shown in Spanish & Low German with English subtitles, and introduced by Dr. Sophie Lavoie.
