The Harriet Irving Library is pleased to present the most recent collection of drawings and micro-photographs by alumnus ('74), and College for Extended Learning instructor, Biff Mitchell. This newest exhibition Magic in the Real: The Mystery That Breathes Behind Things takes us on a journey into the woods. The photos imbue the silence and mystery of nature, while the abstract drawings on wood bring us deeper into the energy of movement and form within the forest itself. The collection offers the viewer time to contemplate the interconnectivity of nature to the human experience, and attempt to act as Mitchell states; "as a portal into vestiges of the tree’s life energy containing the tree’s memories."
Mitchell is a well- respected Fredericton artist and the author of seven novels. An inventive photographer, Biff professes that "photography is my passion. Every second, from capturing the image to post-processing, is sheer joy."
The show is located on the main floor of the HIL, and runs from September through the end of October. All are welcome.

Construction of the Harriet Irving Library Research Commons is underway on the third floor of the Harriet Irving Library. The development of the Research Commons, supported by the Arthur L. Irving Family Foundation, will transform the entire third floor of the Harriet Irving Library into a modern, interdisciplinary, research-driven learning environment to further innovation, scholarship and research at UNB.
The Harriet Irving Library Research Commons is set to open in the Fall of 2020, and you can track its progress by watching for updates via UNB Libraries’ social media.
