Book Design Award Winners Exhibit

This news post is more than one year old. Some information may have changed.

Winning books from the 27th annual Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada are currently on display in the H.R. Stewart Exhibition Room, 5th floor, Harriet Irving Library.

The exhibition will continue until 13 November 2009. Viewing hours are Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The thirty-two winning titles were selected from 243 entries; 89 publishers from eight provinces participated. The prize-winning books were exhibited internationally at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo in July 2009, and will be part of the Frankfurt and Leipzig Book Fairs in Germany in October 2009 and March 2010 respectively. Nationally the books have travelled from coast-to-coast. The only New Brunswick venue is Fredericton’s Harriet Irving Library.

The Anchorage Press (Jolicure, NB) published two of the 32 prize-winning books and is the only publishing company recognized from New Brunswick. Their award-winning entries were, in the poetry category, first prize for The House that Stands (written by Stefan A. Rose) and in the pictorial category, third prize for Silver Ghost (written by Harry Thurston with photographs by Thaddeus Holownia).

The Alcuin Society is a Vancouver based non-profit society for the support and appreciation of fine books. In addition to the annual Book Design Competition, the Society publishes a quarterly journal, Amphora, and organizes lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and field visits on various aspects of the book.

For more information on the display, please contact Archives & Special Collections at e-mail archives@unb.ca or telephone: 453-4748
