The Harriet Irving Library (HIL) is in the process of transforming its first floor space into a more flexible, innovative environment where members of our campus communities can come together to learn, create and share knowledge.
The HIL Learning Commons is a multi-phase project — one of its goals is to provide additional seating for approx. 200 students.
Phase One of the Commons project was undertaken between May-October 2006 with the following results:
- Library Collection Reorganization (all floors)
- Construction of Access Ramp at front entrance
- Repair of Foundation Wall
- Coffee Shop Renovation
Phase Two begins the week of November 6 (continuing until December 1) in the front section of HIL’s Third Floor.
Third Floor renovations will enable HIL to move some of its existing office space from the First Floor to the Third Floor, paving the way for new group study areas.
Quiet study space for students is available on the 4th floor of HIL. Our Engineering and Science libraries also offer study space.
Once completed, the HIL Learning Commons will provide a central “one-stop shop” for research needs — a comfortable environment with access to library resources, new technologies, expertise and enhanced group study and presentation spaces.
In an effort to keep our patrons informed of reconstruction activities and progress, HIL is developing a Learning Commons website that will be accessible shortly via the UNB Libraries homepage.
