Archives & Special Collections Student Job Opportunities

Love history and learning about the past? Archives & Special Collections Student Assistants have the opportunity to work with a wide range of primary resources including rare books, theses, photos, local history materials, and more. Duties may include processing theses; retrieving books and other materials from locked stacks; re-shelving books/materials; supervising the use of rare and archival resources in the Winslow Research Room; answering general reference questions from staff, students, faculty, and the public using the library and internet resources; assisting researchers by photocopying or scanning material; undertaking basic conservation work on rare books and archival materials; inputting data into departmental databases; and working closely with full-time staff members on special projects as assigned.

Student Assistants must be: detail-oriented and have the ability to work accurately; responsible and have strong organizational skills; and able to learn and execute library procedures. They must also have: some understanding of historical research methods and approaches; the ability to work with the public; and good keyboarding skills. An asset would be a demonstrated ability to be self-directed in carrying out responsibilities. Some physical activity (e.g. lifting boxes) will be required.  Previous library experience and familiarity with word-processing and database software will be considered assets, but are not required.

Work hours (10-15 hours per week) must be scheduled during regular departmental hours of 8:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday. Student Assistants will be required to read and sign the Archives & Specials Collections “Student Assistant Guidelines for Employment Form” which includes a “Confidentiality Agreement Form”.
