Flu Season is here!

Are you protected?
Get your flu vaccine at the HIL Flu Clinic:

When:    Thursday, October 20th, 2011

9 until 11 am OR 1:30 until 3:30 pm

Where:  Milham Room (Rm 100), Harriet Irving Library, UNBF

Cost:      $15 for students, $25 for all others

Please note that you will be required to wait for 15 minutes following your injection for your own safety!


In addition to the HIL Flu Clinic, you can get your flu vaccine at one of the following clinics on campus:

  • Wednesday, Oct 12th: 1:30 – 3:30 at CC Jones Student Services Centre, Room 024
  • Thursday, Oct 13th: 9 – 11 and 1:30 – 3:00 at CC Jones Student Services Centre, Room 024
  • Friday, Oct 14th: 9 – 11:30 and 1:30 – 3:30 at IUC Physics & Admin, Room 106 (HR)
  • Tuesday, Oct 19th: 11 – 2 at McConnell Hall, Senior Common Room
  • Wednesday, Oct 26th: 1:30 – 3:30 at STU Gym
  • Thursday, Oct 27th: 9 – 11 and 12 – 2 at CC Jones Student Services Centre, Room 024
  • Friday, Oct 28th: 9 – 11 and 2 – 3:30 at CC Jones Student Services Centre, Room 024

Be Proactive! Take Precautions!

The influenza (FLU) virus can live on some surfaces anywhere from a couple of hours up to a couple of days! Here are a few tips to help prevent catching a cold or the flu:

  • Using household cleaners, clean regularly areas that are touched frequently, such as keyboards, doorknobs, sink water tap handles, phones, desktop surfaces, etc.
  • Do not share water bottles or drinks.
  • Wash your hands with hot soapy water frequently.
  • Use hand sanitizer (60 to 90% alcohol based) when you do not have access to soapy water to wash your hands.
  • Cough and sneeze into your sleeve to prevent spreading germs to others.
  • If you are sick, try to isolate yourself from others when possible to avoid spreading germs.

When should you cite something? Just what are citation styles? This free workshop will provide general research writing and citation tips, with focus on how APA handles the citation of print and e-sources, plus some hands-on automatic formatting using Refworks as well as article databases’ Cite and Cite Format options.

This event, a joint initiative of UNBF Libraries and the UNBF Student Union, is intended for undergraduate students.

Recent International Cinema

UNBF Libraries, the Department of English, and the Department of Culture and Language Studies invite students, staff, and faculty to their “Recent International Cinema Series” to be held on Wednesday evenings.

The screenings will take place in the Milham Room (Room 100) in the Harriet Irving Library Learning Commons.

Showtime is 7:00pm.  Admission is free.

Sept. 21- Of Gods and Men (2010), directed by Xavier Beauvois. French with English Subtitles.

Sept. 28- Alamar (2009), directed by Pedro Gonzàlez-Rubio. Spanish with English Subtitles.

Oct. 5- Film Socialism (2010), directed by Jean-Luc Godard. French with English Subtitles.

Oct. 12- Chaotic Ana (2007), directed by Julio Médem. Spanish with English Subtitles.

Lectures On Children’s Fantasy

Distinguished scholar and Eileen Wallace Children’s Literature Fellow, Farah Mendlesohn, will be delivering a weekly series of noon-hour lectures on fantasy literature for children starting Tuesday, September 13th in the Nan Gregg Room, 4th floor, Harriet Irving Library, on the UNB Fredericton campus.

Topics and dates are as follows:

  • The enclosed child-garden of the nineteenth century fantasy.  Tuesday, September 13th, 12pm
  • Escaping the influence of Narnia in the Inter-War fantasy.  Tuesday, September 20th, 12pm
  • Destiny and decline in the post-war fantasy.  Tuesday, September 27th, 12pm
  • Canadian children’s fantasy: the results of research in the Wallace Collection.  Tuesday, October 4th, 12pm

Members of the university communities and the public are invited to attend. There is no admission charge.

Mendlesohn, a scholar at Middlesex University in North London, is a distinguished researcher in her field, having authored such key texts as The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction (2005) which won both the Hugo Award and the British Science Fiction Association Award (BSFA), Rhetorics of Fantasy (2009) which also won the BSFA, and The Inter-galactic Playground: A Critical Study of Children’s and Teens’ Science Fiction (2009).

RefWorks is a tool for tracking the literature used in your research and assignments. This session, intended for beginning users, is a practical tutorial on use of the product. We’ll show you how to create and manage an account, import citations from research databases, and use the product to add references to your paper in the citation style of your choice. For undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff.
