Utilizing OER

Finding OER

The first step in the process to add an OER to your classroom should always be finding what's already out there. This can help you assess whether you'll be adopting, adapting, or creating your own resource. The resources listed below are just a small sample of the many platforms hosting openly-licensed content. However, many others exist! If you are unable to find openly licensed resources that meet your needs, please reach out for support.

Evaluating OER

Once you have found an OER, just like with all other sources of information, you should evaluate its quality. Take some time to critically review the content, review process, and quality of information. For guidance on evaluating OER, review the following resources:

Creating OER

If you have been unable to find a suitable OER to adopt, or adapt to fit your needs, you may want to explore creating your own OER. AtlanticOER is a service that supports the hosting and creation of Open Educational Resources developed by educators and students in the Atlantic provinces. Affiliates of UNB can open free accounts to use Pressbooks, a leading platform for digital publishing. There are also funding opportunities available through AtlanticOER for educators who are adapting or creating OER. If you are interested in creating an open textbook or open educational resource, reach out to oer@unb.ca, to discuss how we can help you get started.

For more general information about what is involved in making your own OER, please see the BC Campus publishing guides.
