Publisher Collections

Publisher Collections found in SPECAR contain published materials, both literary and non-literary, collected by UNB Archives & Special Collections on an on-going and consistent basis, from these regional presses:

  • Acadiensis Press
  • Chapel Street Editions
  • Chocolate River Publishing
  • Fiddlehead Poetry Books
  • Gaspereau Press
  • Goose Lane Editions
  • Hardscrabble Press

It also contains a completed run of Frog Hollow Press (no longer in operation). Other regional presses with full runs of material will be added in the future, such as Tantramar Press and Broken Jaw Press, and emerging presses, such as Emergency Flash Mob Press. This unique collection was designed to facilitate more systematic research into these specific regional publishers and their output over time. The dominant subjects represented in the collection are Canadian and New Brunswick literature but also include works on history, art and architecture, sports, biography, and social sciences.

Most of materials in this collection were originally part of the Rufus Hathaway Collection before that collection was reconstituted to its original 1933 donation during the winter and summer of 2024. The remaining materials were gathered from the all-encompassing collections of Archives Books (SPECAR) and Rare books (SPECRB) collections.

NOTE:  Although, as of 2024 Gaspereau Press is located in Nova Scotia, the owners have New Brunswick connections and therefore the catalogue is considered NBana even though not all the published books are by NB authors or are about NB.  Also, in 2026, the work currently carried out at The Hardscrabble Press – poetry chapbooks and letterpress broadsides – will be folded into the larger Gaspereau publishing program.  Gaspereau will move operations to Sackville, NB, and will fully be considered a New Brunswick publisher and thus continue to be acquired by UNB as part of its NBana collection.
