Departmental and alumnal tapestries

Location: The Alumni tapestries hung in the Alumni Memorial Building; the Forest tapestry in the Forestry and Geology Building; the Mechanical Engineering tapestry in Head Hall.

Date unveiled: 1980s

Artist/Creator: Dr. Ivan H. Crowell (designer, weaver); Susan Turnbull (embroidery).

Notes: These wool tapestries were woven by fibre artist and UNB alumnus Ivan Crowell (Class of 1929) in the early 1980s. Each tapestry represents approximately 26 eight-hour days at the loom plus another seven days of handsewing and finishing. Dr. Crowell created the patterns for all the woven images represented here, and Susan Turnbull worked her embroidery needle on them.

The Mechanical Engineering tapestry was woven in 1981 by Crowell and donated by Harvey A. Semple, Class of 1964 and Professor of Mechanical Engineering (1965-1990).

The Alumnae Society and the Associated Alumni of UNB tapestries were woven and donated in 1982 by Crowell.

The UNB Foresters tapestry was woven and donated in 1983 by Ivan Crowell in honour of the Forestry Class of 1929, which Crowell was a graduate of.
