Previous/other names: GALA (Gay and Lesbian Alliance)
Prominent date(s) of activity: 1989 - present
History: SPECTRUM is a campus organization that provides support and awareness for sexual minorities. The group looks after the interests of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit, queer, and questioning students, staff, and faculty at UNB and STU.
The first meeting of GALA (Gay and Lesbian Alliance) took place on September 17, 1989. The name of the group was changed in 2000 to reflect the new constitution and the broadening inclusiveness of the group.
In 2003 Spectrum filed a request to the Student Union for access to an office space. A resource center was deemed necessary for the group to effectively reach out to and advocate for LBGTQ students on campus.
Activities: The group holds meetings, hosts guest lectures, and sponsors social activities such as bowling, movies, and game nights.
