An offer of funds from Lord Beaverbrook prompted a debate over whether the University needed a new library or a hockey rink on campus. The gift of $250,000 had the stipulation that, if it were used to build a new rink in the next five years, an additional $100,000 would be donated. At the time, UNB possessed approximately 30,000 volumes - one of the smallest collections of the Maritime Universities.
