UNB alumna Jane Fritz (MSc(CS) 1982) was appointed Dean of Computer Science in 1998, the first woman to hold this position. She began her career at UNB in 1982 and was made full professor in 1996. Dr. Fritz was instrumental in the establishment of the Information Technology Centre and actively involved in the establishment of the National Research Council's E-commerce Institute on campus. She has been the recipient of many awards including the Allan P. Stuart Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1989 and the Special Recognition Award from KIRA (Knowledge Industry Recognition and Achievement) in 2001 for her developmental work in Fredericton's IT community and her support of the E-commerce Institute. During Canada's first Information Technology (IT) Week celebrations in 2001, Dr. Fritz was named an IT hero. On July 1, 2004, Dr. Fritz was appointed Associated Vice-President Academic (Learning Environment) and was essential in creating the International RelationsOffice, as well as providing leadership in establishing the Human Rights Office and the development and adoption of UNB's Declaration of Rights and Responsibilities. She was a recipient of the President's Medal in 2008, and went on to serve as Acting Vice-President Academic, acting Executive Director of the College of Extended Learning, and Acting Associate Vice-President for Integrated Technology Services before her retirement in 2010. Dr. Fritz was honoured by UNB at Encaenia in 2012 when she was made Professor Emerita in Computer Science.
