Brunswickan Alumni Club

Previous/other names: N/A

Prominent date(s) of activity: 1987 - 1994?

History: A reunion was held in 1986 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Canada's oldest student publication, the Brunswickan. During this event much interest was expressed in the formation of a Brunswickan Alumni Club. The club ensured continued contact between former members of the staff, and the seasoned group would act as a support group for the current staff.

Activities: The Brunswickan Alumni Club sponsored the newspaper's annual awards, fund-raised for Brunswickan scholorships and awards, and worked to ensure the development of student journalism at UNB.

Note(s): In 1991 the Brunswickan Alumni Club sponsored a trip to the Canadian University Press (CUP) National Conference in Vancouver for two members of the Brunswickan staff. The Brunswickan had been an influencial member of CUP before leaving the organization in 1978 for a variety of reasons including high membership fees. The Brunswickan was invited to the conference to re-evaluate whether or not they would rejoin. After the trip it was decided that the Brunswickan would not re-enstate their membership with CUP, because the Brunswickan staff did not agree with CUP politics, and because they did not believe that much benefit would be gained from the partnership.
