Dr. Anne Compton teaches Literature and Creative Writing at UNB Saint John's Department of Humanities and Languages. As a writer and literary critic, she has published books, articles and reviews on poetry and Canadian and Maritime literature. In addition to her prose criticism, Anne Compton is the author of two award-winning books of poetry: her debut book Opening the Island won the Atlantic Poetry Prize in 2003, and her second collection of poetry Processional also won the Atlantic Poetry Prize in 2006, as well as the Governor-General's Literary Award for Poetry in 2005. Her third collection of poetry, asking questions indoors and out, was published in 2009, and Compton's most recent poetry collection, Alongside, was published in 2013.
Dr. Compton was one of the four editors of Coastlines: The poetry of Atlantic Canada published to critical acclaim in 2002. She served as the only Writer-in-Residence at UNBSJ from 2008 to 2010, and has been a member of the Board of the Lorenzo Society Reading Series. In 2008, Dr. Compton won the Alden Nowlan Award for Excellence in the Literary Arts, as well as a National Magazine Award in Poetry. That same year she also won the Excellence in Teaching Award for the Faculty of Arts at UNB Saint John and the Excellence in Teaching Award for the Department of Humanities and Languages, also at UNB Saint John. In 2012, she retired from UNBSJ to focus on writing full-time.
