Statement Of Support & Guidelines For Open Access

UNB recognizes the open access publishing model to be consistent with the mission of the university to disseminate its research and scholarship as widely as possible. Therefore, joining with many other institutions of higher learning around the world, UNB supports experimentation with emerging models of open access.

More specifically:

1. UNB encourages faculty, staff, and students to publish in open access journals whenever possible to ensure the greater visibility and impact of their research; and
2. UNB encourages faculty, staff, and students to deposit their scholarly works into UNB Scholar, the institutional repository supported by UNB Libraries, for the benefit of easy access and long-term preservation, as well as the increased visibility and reputation of the authors and the institution. In cases where publishing agreements, professional obligations, or commercial prospects disallow or discourage deposit, authors are encouraged to submit the bibliographic information of their works to UNB Scholar so that UNB can maintain a complete record of the research output of the institution. UNB Scholar will assist UNB researchers in meeting the obligations of the Tri-Council (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) and other funding agencies in Canada and elsewhere to make the research funded by these bodies available to the public. UNB Scholar will conform to international standards for open access.

UNB also encourages faculty, staff, and students to know their rights as authors and to retain copyright of their works through use of appropriate author addenda when negotiating publication.

UNB respects academic freedom and intellectual property such that adherence to the above recommendations is voluntary. This statement complies with collective agreements currently in place.

Support to Authors

UNB Libraries’ Centre for Digital Scholarship is responsible for maintaining and enhancing UNB’s institutional repository, UNB Scholar. Librarians on both campuses will support faculty in depositing their scholarly works into UNB Scholar, and otherwise making the results of their research and scholarship open access.
