Thomas Telford (1757-1834)

Thomas Telford was born in Westerkirk, Dumfries, Scotland. He was a stonemason, architect and civil engineer. Telford moved to London in 1782 where, over a 20 year period, he was responsible for building approximately 120 bridges and 1,000 miles of road.
Achievements include the construction of:
◆ Caledonian Canal, Scotland
◆ Menai Suspension Bridge, Wales
◆ Dean Bridge, Scotland
◆ Gotha Canal, Sweden
◆ Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Wales (aqueduct on the Ellesmere Canal,
Cheshire, England)
In 1818 Telford helped found the Institute of Civil Engineers and became its first president.
