New Exhibit In Harriet Irving Library

Archives & Special Collections in the Harriet Irving Library is pleased to announce the arrival of “Bookbinding Materials and Techniques, 1700-1920” a travelling exhibit acquired from the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild.

The exhibit introduces the practical and aesthetic changes in techniques of hand binding, over the 18th and 19th centuries, due to mechanization, specialization within the trade, the availability and cost of materials, and developments in printing, publishing, and book-selling.

Thirty-one panels and fourteen books are displayed showing various binding styles and techniques, and several binding tools. To further enhance the display, various rarely-exhibited items from the library
