Series No. 1

Correspondence.-- 1926-1995 ; (predominant 1950-1994).-- 224 cm of textual records

Scope and content: This series documents Trueman's literary career as author of more than a dozen books and numerous light articles. It also reflect his long-standing relationship with Lord Beaverbrook as well as his membership on several boards and committees. In addition, the series highlights his roles as a public speaker and as a reporter, editor and columnist with The Telegraph-Journal and The Evening Times-Globe. Letters between Trueman and his wife, children, and siblings are also included.

The series consists of letters, telegrams, notes, and memos. Both incoming and outgoing communications are often included.

The series is comprised of 5 subseries: 1. Chronological, 2. Topical, 3. Individuals, 4. Publishers, 5. Family.

Although most of the material in this series was unsorted at the time of acquisition, the creator had grouped together some correspondence by year. This is reflected in subseries 1, Chronological. The creator also had grouped together letters relating to specific committees as well as to significant personal events and activities, such as speaking tours, press tours, and honourary degrees. This is reflected in subseries 2, Topical. File arrangement of subseries 2 is alphabetical. In some cases the archivist created a few files following the pattern set by the creator.

As well, communications with co-workers, friends, and publishers often were separated from the bulk of correspondence. This is reflected in subseries 3, Individuals and subseries 4, Publishers. File arrangement of both subseries is alphabetical. The archivist has added to subseries 3 a few files following the pattern set by the creator.

Subseries 1, Chronological contains correspondence with friends, acquaintances, and members of various groups and committees. A number of letters pertain to Trueman's newspaper work. Included are invitations to address various groups, congratulatory notes, thank-you letters and comments from readers about literary works as well as a few letters from Canadian novelist, Robertson Davies.

Subseries 2, Topical includes correspondence with friends, readers and members of various committees and organizations. Letters discuss travel plans for literary and press tours and the adaptation of Cousin Elva for television and the stage among other topics.

The subseries also contains a number of letters relating to Trueman's receipt of the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour, to his public relations activities for Canada Savings Bond campaigns and to his work as an alternate member of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission. Commission letters discuss park operations and development including acquisitions, publicity, special events, and legal matters. Several communications with David Walker and Alden Nowlan about the writing of Nowlan's book, Campobello: The Outer Island as well as personal correspondence with Edmund Muskie and John D. Roosevelt, Jr. are also included.

Subseries 3, Individuals includes correspondence with Lord Beaverbrook, Thornton W. Burgess, and Ralph Costello. Communications with Lord Beaverbrook and his agents contain comments on provincial and federal politics, University of New Brunswick affairs, construction projects, Trueman's literary activities and personal matters.

Correspondence with Ralph Costello, president and publisher and of The Telegraph-Journal and The Evening Times-Globe, discusses Trueman's difficulties with publishers, his weekly column, story ideas, and personal matters. Communications with children's author Thornton W. Burgess discuss literary and personal matters.

Subseries 4, Publishers includes letters between Trueman and a number of publishing houses and magazines. It also includes correspondence with Marion Stevens his literary agent in New York City. The bulk of this subseries constitutes communications with McClelland and Stewart Limited. Letters discuss literary matters such as contracts, publishing rights, public appearances, revisions, proofs, royalties, and book promotion.

Subseries 5, Family includes correspondence between Trueman and close family members including his wife, Mildred; his sons, Douglas and Macmillan (Mac), and their spouses; and his sisters and brothers. A few communications between Trueman's siblings are also included.
