Series 1, sub-series 2: Drama Scrapbooks. -- 1939 - 1971. -- 111 cm of textual material.

Scope and Content: This sub-series consists of 30 scrapbooks documenting Alvin Shaw's involvement with theater, mainly during his time spent at the University of New Brunswick. The first two volumes, however, contain material from the time that Shaw spent at the Owen Sound Collegiate-Vocational Institute, Khaki University and the University of Toronto. Most of the material in volumes 3-29 documents the plays performed by the UNB Drama Society, although there is also material relating to plays that Shaw adjudicated or had involvement with outside of the UNB Drama Society.

These 30 volumes include newspaper clippings ( mainly reviews and information concerning plays, although items of interest concerning people involved with theatre are also included), programmes from various productions, photographs of people, plays and sets (b&w and colour), personal notes and telegrams (mainly addressed to Shaw), posters, invitation cards to events associated with plays and festivals, adjudication notes, stage and theatre plans from various performance venues, mementos from different plays, and registration forms for entering competitions.

Of particular interest is a nomination letter for the University of Toronto Student's Administrative Council Honour Award, which Shaw received in 1950, his last year there. The letter, found in volume 2, contains a detailed account of Shaw's involvement both with theatre and extra-curricular activities while at the University of Toronto. Also of interest is information regarding a play called "Midnight Alley", which caused an uproar on the University of New Brunswick campus after the performance was banned in 1961.

Arrangement is chronological

Notes:

Title: Title is based on the contents of the sub-series.

Arrangement: Volume 3 (b) is not part of the original volume sequence, but was added because it contains material almost identical in nature to that of volume 3 (a). It would appear as though the UNB Drama Society compiled 3 (b), whereas Shaw compiled 3 (a).

Finding Aids: At the beginning of this sub-series there is a file containing finding aids created by Alvin Shaw. The first is a chronological list of the plays and events that appear in the scrapbooks. It is complete from 1939 - 1967, and covers volumes 1 - the beginning of volume 25. The second finding aid lists the names of people in the drama society, some of whom have corresponding volume numbers beside their names.
