Dr. Desmond Pacey was one of Canada's most prominent literary
historians and critics. His greatest passion was to cultivate an
interest in Canadian literature, and his life's work was dedicated
to this goal. Recognizing the value of research and archival
records, Dr. Pacey built his collection through regular donations
to the UNB Archives. He recognized the value of scholarly research,
and also sought to promote the UNB Archives' central role in
preserving Canadian literature. It was through Dr. Pacey's efforts
that the university library acquired the literary manuscripts to
complement the Hathaway Collection with records relating to
prominent Fredericton poets such as Bliss Carman and Sir Charles
G.D. Roberts. He clearly wanted to build on this strong literary
legacy, and to play a central role in preserving this tradition.
His collection is a valuable contribution to the development of
Canadian literature, and to its establishment as a reputable and
scholarly discipline.
A very special note of thanks to University Archivist Mary
Flagg, supervisor of this project, for offering me the opportunity
to do the work that I most enjoy, and for sharing my passion for
literary and archival manuscripts. Her dedication to her
profession is evident in her careful attention to detail and in the
extensive preliminary work which she undertook with the Pacey
Fonds. Mary's support and encouragement made completion of this
project a pleasure.
The staff of the UNB Archives and Special Collections
Department: Mary Flagg, Linda Baier, Patsy Hale, Patti Auld, and
Penny Hollis provided a caring work environment, for which I am
very appreciative.
Patricia Belier kindly provided her skilled and thorough
editorial skills for the final proof-reading of this finding aid;
her careful attention to detail helped to fine-tune the final
product.
