Series No. 1
F.J. Toole Administration.-- 1935-1965 ; (predominant 1946-1965).-- 15 cu ft of textual records
Scope and content: This series documents Frank Toole's tenure as department head as well as his pivotal role in the development of UNB. (No records were deposited for the years 1931-1934, the first four years of Toole's appointment.) As head of chemistry, Dean of Arts and Science, Dean of Graduate Studies and Vice-President (Academic), Toole worked to establish a graduate school, to promote research, to expand library holdings and to create university organizations.
This series includes correspondence, departmental and organizational minutes, committee and departmental reports, research reports, notices, architectural plans, drafts of academic papers, lecture notes, completed research grant applications, and examination question sheets.
It consists of 3 subseries: 1. Departmental Files, 2. Beaverbrook Correspondence, 3. Correspondence.
Correspondence located in subseries 1, Departmental Files, is primarily between Toole and UNB administrators, students, and faculty as well as academics, administrators and research scientists affiliated with corporations and various institutions. Some correspondence located in subseries 1 was written by other members of the department, notably Karel Wiesner.
Correspondence contained in subseries 1 discusses the awarding of scholarships, fellowships and grants, the ordering of supplies and equipment, and the hiring of faculty and staff. It also discusses faculty appointments, students' progress, their abilities and employability, disciplinary measures, conferences and seminars, and university and departmental policy, programmes and curriculum. Some letters in subseries 1, especially some of those in files 80-1 to 80-7, are of a more personal nature.
Correspondence located in subseries 2, Beaverbrook Correspondence, dates from 1946 to 1963 and is primarily between Toole and Lord Beaverbrook or one of his agents. It relates to the establishment of the Beaverbrook Graduate Scholarships in Chemistry and the Beaverbrook Overseas Scholarships as well as UNB administrative matters.
Letters located in subseries 3, Correspondence, were deposited separately and were considered by Toole to be of a more personal nature. This correspondence, however, does discuss departmental and university matters.
Subseries 3, file 89-9, contains Toole's personal correspondence dating from 1936 to 1956. It includes letters between Frank and Norah Toole and their relatives and friends living in England, Canada and the United States. Letters written by the Tooles' English relatives during the 1930s and 1940s discuss European politics and wartime social and economic conditions as well as family matters.
Of special interest in subseries 1 are files 2 and 3 "Alexander College" and file 50 "Gregg, Dr. Milton" which relate to UNB's post-war programme. The latter file includes a copy of the booklet "The University of New Brunswick A Retrospect and A Prospect (1925)".
Also of interest is subseries 2, file 88-5, "Lady Davis Foundation" which contains materials relating to a post-war programme whereby outstanding European scholars were given funds to facilitate their entrance into academic life in Canada.
Arrangement of subseries 1 and 2 is alphabetical. Subseries 3 is arranged chronologically.
Title based on contents of series.
Researchers should note that the creator frequently grouped files under a single subject heading. These subject headings appear in the main list of file titles. The archivist has created an appendix for each subject heading having more than three files. Each appendix includes a list of file titles.
Some files were divided by archivist to facilitate use. These files have been identified.
