Quiet space

March 13, 2010

Hi, I am a fellow student here at UNB and I always love to study on the 4th floor of the Harriet Irving Library.  I find it so much more quiet with each cubicle private.  However, a couple of days ago I noticed that someone changed the cubicle arrangements.   This has really bothered me because the way they are arranged now seems to encourage people to talk.  Because people work back to back it’s now easier for friends to just sit in adjacent cubicles and chat.  I’m very disappointed — I figured the library would encourage a quiet and studious atmosphere.

Thanks for your comment.  You’re right – we are concerned about providing a quiet atmosphere.   The orientation of the carrels were changed as part of a project to increase access to power drops.  We will keep an eye on the noise level on the 4th floor – we know you and others depend on us to provide quiet study space.  We hope you like the new window blinds on the 4th floor.

Temperature control

January 26, 2010

This Sunday I went to Harriet Irving Library to do some homework.   I stayed there for one hour.  But I felt much colder in the computer area–common area than usual in the first floor.  In the end, I went home to continue my work.  Is it possible to adjust the temperature in the library?

Thank you for your comments and we’re sorry that you had to leave the library to warm up.  We have passed along your comments to UNB’s Facilities Management folks, who do their best to keep our buildings at a reasonable temperature.  HIL can be chilly in some areas!
