Research Help Desk Staff

Please speak more quietly when chatting amongst yourselves.  I understand that it is necessary to talk to students when they come to you for help, but please be courteous of the students on the computers nearby when you are chatting with your co-workers.  For those of us who do not own laptops these computers are the only one’s we have access to and it is awfully hard to study and concentrate when you are chit chatting amongst each other all the time.  Please….especially now that we are into exam time…

Course Reserves

2 hours is way too short for course reserves…3 or 4 hours is much more realistic.  Please take this comment into consideration.  Thanks.

Thanks very much for your comment.  The loan period for Reserves is set by the course instructor, not the library.  We offer a number of options for the loan period, and the instructor decides based on the number of students in the class, length of the reading, etc.  You may want to suggest to the instructor that the period be extended.

Reserves

Signing out Reserves for 2 hours is not enough time, should be at least 3 – 4 hours.  Some materials are required for longer.

Instructors, not Library staff, choose the loan period for Reserve items.  You may want to ask your instructor to consider a longer loan period for a particular item.

Power bar extension cords query

It would be helpful to have power bar extension cords in the Commons Cafe for plugging in computers.

Thanks for your suggestion.  You aren’t alone in your need to plug in at the library!

We are concerned about the safety hazard posed by cords running across the floor, and are  taking  steps to increase access to power without compromising safety.

Over the past few months we added approximately fifty new power drops on the 3rd and 4th floor of HIL.

If you prefer to work on the first floor you will find access to power and to desk top computers throughout the floor.
