Joanne Smyth

Director, Collections Strategy
UNB Fredericton

As Director, Collections Strategy and Scholarly Communication, I am responsible for UNB Libraries' acquisitions budget and provide oversight to its Technical Services Department. That unit secures access to library resources through purchase, subscription or the support of open access infrastructure; manages the licensing of electronic material; ensures that library holdings are retrievable through our catalogue, WorldCat, and vendors' platforms; and evaluates and analyses Library collections for greatest cost benefit to our user community.

We work with regional and national consortia to negotiate more favourable terms for access to needed resources while working toward a more democratic model of scholarly communication through sustainable open access.

We also subscribe to the principles enunciated in the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) Policy Statement entitled “Freedom of Expression in Research Libraries” and the Canadian Library Association’s “Statement on Intellectual Freedom”  and work to ensure users' rights to privacy are upheld.

Please contact me to discuss any aspect of the Library's collections.
